The Cleveland SPE Board would like to thank our recently retired Board Member, John Sovis, for his many years of Service
to our industry, to the Society of Plastics Engineers, and particularly to our local Cleveland Board.
John earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Michigan State University, joined SPE in 1997 and is an Emeritus Member. He has served our section as President and Treasurer.
John, please accept our sincere gratitude for your many years of dedicated service to SPE Cleveland.
The 2021 SPE Foundation Cleveland Section Scholarship ($1,500) was awarded to Ms. Kayla Riebe from Mentor, OH, a third year student at The University of Akron. Kayla is majoring in Chemical Engineering and pursuing a minor in Polymer Science/ Engineering.
Kayla’s inspiration to major in math and science came from her grandfather, who was an Organic Chemistry Professor at John Carroll University.
Kayla enjoys her studies as well as serving as VP of the Society of Women Engineers and The University of Akron Bowling Club President.
Congratulations, Kayla!
The Cleveland Section of SPE’s Education/Students Committee is hoping to have as good a session in 21-22 as we did last session. Despite the steep challenges that came with the COVID pandemic, including social distancing requirements and limits on the usual activities, we were able to still help support the industry with our efforts to promote responsible plastics use, help propel young graduates into the polymers world, and show the evolving minds of our community youth the wonders and capabilities of plastics. We were able to offer a scholarship this year to a northeast Ohio east side student studying at Akron in Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering. We were also able to give awards to some high school students at the Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair (NEOSEF). The NEOSEF event was held virtually this year, but our judges were able to see recordings, pictures, and papers from the various projects. Three students with polymers/plastics oriented projects were identified and awarded financial grants for their efforts in building their knowledge of plastics. We hope our modest contribution will encourage them to continue down the path of excellence in our industry. Even with the expected struggles that come with the pandemic, we will continue in our efforts to build education and help students associated with the plastics industry.

Officer Reports:
Treasurer: D. Crist will soon issue a proposed budget for 2021-22. He reported that we have $405.00 deposited in pass-through revenue, and that we have $495.00 liability insurance due. Several sponsors have renewed their ads in the Newsletter (Mar-Bal, M. Holland and LyondellBasell). D. Meade asked D. Crist for a copy of the 503(c) registration, so that when he solicits other companies for sponsorship, he can send that to the prospective sponsor.
Membership: T. Waddle submitted a report before the meeting. Total membership for August stands at 137, down from 146 in May. T. Waddle has reminded members to renew. R. Keeley sent out a LinkedIn invitation to mid-level managers and up to join the Board, but has not received any responses yet. As a lure for members, S. Montgomery suggested that we put out more content, and she will contact the Akron Section for a copy of the recorded presentation from Berry Plastics.
Communications / Newsletter: All 9 sponsors of the Newsletter have been contacted, 4 have renewed, 5 are outstanding. We will include content in the Newsletter, and the Board will give input by 9-1-21.
Education: R. Raleigh will contact CASE soon to see the status of their student chapter. R. Raleigh will give information to S. Montgomery concerning the scholarship awards so that this can be included in the President’s Message in the Newsletter.
House: no report.
Councilor: D. Meade reported that the next meeting is on 11-8-21 via Zoom. The Council now has an Advisory Board. Since the near future meetings will be virtual, the expenses to attend these meetings will disappear. There is no current information on ANTEC 2022.
Technical Programs: The Board agreed to discuss upcoming virtual events at the in-person Board meeting in September. The AMI Event on 11-3 & 4 at the Huntington Center CLE will be a great opportunity to network, drive membership, get ideas for virtual events, etc. The Board agreed that we should try and get a booth for this event, and T. Waddell and D. Meade will investigate. Can we share the cost and occupancy with the Akron Section?
The Injection Molding Conference in CLE has been canceled due to lack of interest. There may be a 2, 1/-2 day virtual event in November 2021. They are planning an in-person event in 2022.
Montgomery proposed having a speaker from the Team NEO cluster (Jacob Nuritsky) give a presentation on Additive Manufacturing. R. Keeley reached out to the Akron Section for their schedule of programs, but has not gotten a response. S. Montgomery will contact Dave Schultz of the Akron Section.
